Curcumin in medical applications

Curcumin is a natural yellow pigment. It is produced in the rhizome of the turmeric plant. This secondary plant substance has anti-cancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is therefore used in various medical applications, including cancer treatment. There is scientific evidence that curcumin can mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy and improve its effectiveness. Several clinical studies on its use in cancer are currently underway. For a purely plant-based substance, there is a surprisingly high number of scientific publications on its use in cancer. A selection of these can be found here.

Curcumin is not water-soluble and is therefore not well absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract. Various pharmacological methods can be used to improve absorption, e.g., the use of various "carrier substances." It has been proven that preparation as a spray for the oral mucosa enables particularly good absorption.
