Curcumin in medical applications

Curcumin is a natural yellow pigment. It is formed in the rhizome of the turmeric plant. This secondary plant ingredient has anti-cancer, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It is therefore used in various medical indications, including cancer treatment. There is scientific evidence that curcumin can alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and improve its effectiveness. A number of clinical studies are currently underway on its use in cancer. For a purely herbal substance, there is a surprisingly high number of scientific publications on its use in cancer. You can find a selection of them here.

Curcumin is not water-soluble and is therefore not well absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract. Various pharmacological methods can be used to improve absorption, e.g. the use of various "carrier substances". Preparation as a spray for the oral mucosa has been shown to enable particularly good absorption.
