Prof. (Syria) Dr. med. Samer Akel, a specialist in internal medicine, hematology, oncology, and palliative care, is the attending physician in charge of the hematology-oncology department. At his alma mater in Syria, he holds an adjunct professorship in internal medicine with a focus on hematology-oncology. In Germany, he earned his doctorate at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Volker Schirrmacher serves as the scientific director. He conducted research for over 30 years at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, where he headed the Department of “Cellular Immunology.” He is an internationally recognized pioneer in cancer immunotherapy, with a focus on oncolytic viruses. Together with the scientists and physicians at the IOZK, he is working on the systematic integration of new scientific findings to further develop IOZK immunotherapy.

In 1985, Managing Director Dr. Wilfried Stücker founded what is now the Cologne Immuno-Oncology Center (IOZK). In collaboration with various physicians and scientists, he developed the IOZK immunotherapy and established the treatment center, including its laboratories.

Stefaan Van Gool, MD, PhD, a specialist in pediatric hematology-oncology with a focus on brain tumors, is a Qualified Person (GMP) and the responsible medical officer for the field of neuro-oncology. At the University Hospital of Leuven and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, he has spent many years conducting scientific research on the use of vaccines in cancer treatment and has published numerous studies.
