New perspectives for cancer therapy

Immunotherapy against cancer at the IOZK in Cologne

In recent decades, the field of tumor immunology has been intensively researched worldwide. The Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded in 2011 and 2018 for immuno-oncological findings, which demonstrates the outstanding importance of this discipline. Our doctors and scientists at the Immuno-Oncology Center in Cologne (IOZK) have been studying the role of the immune system in cancer and chronic infectious diseases since 1985.

In the course of this, we have developed the IOZK immunotherapy against cancer. Our experience with it shows us that we are on the right path: With this treatment method, we can offer our patients a customized therapy that offers good prospects for gentle treatment and the highest possible quality of life.

Right from the start, we were convinced by the multi-layered qualities of immunotherapy. It aims to strengthen and activate the patient's own immune system in the fight against cancer. Ideally, it provides long-term protection against newly growing cancer cells. In contrast, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy aim to destroy the tumor through surgery or medication - often with severe side effects for healthy cells and the immune system.

We are endeavoring to further develop IOZK immunotherapy in line with the latest immuno-oncological findings. We can already make this available to tumor patients today - even if it is not yet a standard of care.

Depending on the terms of the contract, the costs may be covered by some private health insurance companies or employers' liability insurance associations.

WHAT WE DO

How IOZK immunotherapy works.

The aim of IOZK immunotherapy is to enable the patient's own immune system to specifically kill tumor cells in the body or inhibit their growth.

WHO WE HELP

The types of cancer for which IOZK immunotherapy against cancer can be used.

Experience from numerous therapies shows that immuno-oncological therapies are effective and comparatively well tolerated across all indications, i.e. for a wide range of tumor types.

Here you will find specific information on the treatment of different types of cancer:

HOW IT WORKS

How we manage to get our own immune system to take action against the tumor cells.

The tumor vaccine IO-VAC® activates the patient's immune system so that it can fight the cancer cells itself. To do this, the vaccine uses the patient's own dendritic cells, tumor antigens and oncolytic viruses.

WHO WE ARE

Specialized doctors and renowned scientists are committed to providing optimal treatment.

The medical and scientific experts - together with the laboratory specialists and the nursing team - care for patients from all over the world. This interdisciplinary collaboration offers patients valuable treatment benefits.

What is immunotherapy?

The immune system is the guardian of our health. Its main function is to distinguish between our own and foreign, between harmless and dangerous. If a tumor has developed, these control mechanisms of the immune system fail so that it can no longer effectively perform its guardian function. The aim of immunological therapy is to "train" the patient's immune system so that it can take action against tumor growth itself.

The importance of dendritic cells

Dendritic cells play a key role in IOZK immunotherapy. They can initiate and regulate immune responses. This ability can be used to generate immune responses against certain proteins of tumor cells and thus fight tumors with the immune system. Dendritic cells are obtained from the patient's blood to generate the patient's own tumor vaccine IO-VAC®.
