New perspectives for cancer therapy
Immunotherapy for cancer at the IOZK in Cologne
In recent decades, the field of tumor immunology has been the subject of intensive research worldwide. The Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded in 2011 and 2018 for discoveries in immuno-oncology, demonstrating the outstanding importance of this discipline. Since 1985, our physicians and scientists at the Immun-Onkologisches Zentrum Köln (IOZK) have been studying the role of the immune system in cancer and chronic infectious diseases.
As part of this process, we developed IOZK immunotherapy for cancer. Our experience with this therapy shows us that we are on the right track: this treatment method allows us to offer our patients a customized therapy that offers good prospects for gentle treatment and the highest possible quality of life.
From the outset, we have been convinced by the multifaceted qualities of immunotherapy. It aims to strengthen and activate the patient's own immune system in the fight against cancer. In the best-case scenario, it provides long-term protection against new cancer cells. In contrast, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy aim to destroy the tumor through surgery or medication—often with serious side effects for healthy cells and the immune system.
We are striving to further develop IOZK immunotherapy in line with the latest findings in immuno-oncology. We can already offer this treatment to tumor patients today—even though it is not yet a standard treatment.
