IOZK lecture: Modulated electro-hyperthermia in children with DIPG, ESHO conference, Charité Berlin
The IOZK took part in the annual conference of the ESHO (European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology), which was held at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. The topic of the IOZK presentation was modulated electro-hyperthermia as part of the treatment of children with DIPG, an aggressive brain tumor(Hyperthermia as part of multimodal immunotherapy for children with DIPG, S. van Gool, J. Makalowski, V. Schirrmacher, W. Stuecker).
This and other presentations provided information on the immunological effects of hyperthermia. Until now, the focus has been on achieving high temperatures in the tissue in order to damage tumor tissue. New findings show that this heating makes the immune system aware of the tumor, among other things. The tumour changes as a result of the hyperthermia and becomes "newly" recognizable to the immune cells. The effect of the heat supports the body's own defenses to fight the tumor.
