IOZK lecture: Modulated electro-hyperthermia in children with DIPG, ESHO conference, Charité Berlin

The IOZK participated in the annual conference of the ESHO (European Society for Hyperthermic Oncology), which took place at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin. The topic of the IOZK presentation was modulated electro-hyperthermiaas part of the treatment of children with DIPG, an aggressive brain tumor (Hyperthermia as part of multimodal immunotherapy for children with DIPG, S. van Gool, J. Makalowski, V. Schirrmacher, W. Stuecker).

This and other presentations provided information about the immunological effects of hyperthermia. Until now, the focus has been on achieving high temperatures in the tissue in order to damage tumor tissue. New findings show that this heating also alerts the immune system to the tumor. The tumor changes as a result of hyperthermia and becomes "newly" recognizable to the immune cells. The effect of heat supports the body's own defenses in fighting the tumor.
